Not only does the immune system which become vulnerable due to HIV attack. The sufferers are also threatened with impaired memory, cognitive function as well. Thus the results of research conducted by experts from the Albert Einstein College, New York, United States.

According to the researchers, HIV vicious attack will damage 5% of brain cells known as astrocytes. The cell was working as a protector of the brain that would prevent dangerous substances transported in the blood vessels in the brain. That is why the destruction of astrocytes may also cause memory impairment of cognitive function.

"Terserangnya astrocytes will allow hazardous substances transported in the blood vessels to the brain. If astrocytes are damaged, then most likely people with HIV will develop severe dementia," said lead researcher Joan Berman.
